JU87 STUKA DIVE BOMBER
The Ju 87 Stuka was the most feared weapon in the German arsenal in the first year of World War II (1939-1945), the Luftwaffe using it to deadly effect during the Blitzkrieg between September 1939 and June 1940. Although vulnerable to the enemy fighters due to its moderate speed in level flight and general lack of maneuverability, the Ju 87 nevertheless soon came to symbolize the might of Nazi Germany as the mere handful of Stukageschwader supporting the Wehrmacht rampaging out of the Fatherland took a heavy toll of the Allied forces.
The most notable feature of the Stuka was its inverted gull wings, as shown in this photograph. Also visible are the two separate sliding “hoods” of the canopy and 37mm Flak 18 mounted on a Junkers Ju 87G.
Knowing Stuka ACE: Hans-Ulrich Rudel
Hans-Ulrich Rudel (2 July 1916 – 18 December 1982) was a Stuka dive-bomber pilot during World War II. The most highly decorated German serviceman of the war, Rudel was one of only 27 military men to be awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, and the only person to be awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross with Golden Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds, Germany’s third highest military decoration at the time and the highest degree of the Knight’s Cross. Rudel flew 2,530 combat missions claiming a total of 2,000 targets destroyed; including 800 vehicles, 519 tanks, 150 artillery pieces, 70 landing craft, nine aircraft, four armored trains, several bridges, a destroyer, two cruisers, and the Soviet battleship Marat.

The model JU87Stuka that we flew was astonishing it was so detailed that we wanted to keep it displayed in the living room instead of flying. However we have flown this Stuka in many occasions and it did not fail or crash in any flight, this plane had enough power to make fun in basic maneuver. That is enough for stock motor given from the factory and there is no need to push for the fast and furious since Stuka had been designed for strategic bombing not a dog fighter. The recommended maneuver you should try is making stall-turn from high altitude and plummets down for dive bombing then pull up to normal flight level. No joking this plane was built for this duty and this is Stuka signature.
In general this RC plane has a nice airframe that renders acceptable stability with no hint of tip stall in slow speed. This is against the look of the wing tips that have sharp-end design and give a feeling of wobbling tendency. Stuka looks agile in general but the fix landing gear indicates that it must bear extra load for the bomb plus drop tank and 37mm cannon on both wing. For these reasons Stuka is vulnerable in dodging when comes up with Spifire, therefore a rear gunner is deadly needed to cover itself against the hot pursuit from enemy fighters.
At low speed the plane responds well with pre-installed flap servos that have a nice, slow operation to help prevent ballooning and the flaps themselves allow the approach speed to get down to a crawl without a hint of wing rock. So landing will be a joyful moment that makes a real feeling of professional pilot in yours. However don’t get me wrong on this narration causes it was judged by the experienced flyer. If you are new to the RC plane well the Stuka is not yet the right plane for now. Nonetheless an average flyer with good skill on low wing trainer is fairly good to tame this warbird.
Here we have only the stocking photo of the Stuka from our club. These planes are owned by three members here and, until today, there are two Stuka remaining and come up for exercise once in a while. There is only unlucky one that had severe damage caused by an accident and got retired. No video was done on the Stuka in our club so I hope that viewing one from the other flyer is not bad for the idea how this plane behave. Please enjoy.
Own one Stuka is not big deal. Fly it to fulfill your dream and passion. This Stuka is a pleasure to fly and is always a center of attention in most occasion. Please click on the image to see full detail of the product.
