RC airplanes for beginners

Easy trainer 340x200

Back in the 1995 rc flyer had typical foam and balsa plane using Motor for their trainer. It did not have a good look like the above picture. Flying and fixing always be routine habit among us since it is not possible to find a good resistant material to build the plane rather that a foam and balsa.  Nowadays EPO foam is succeeding and, to many flyers it is highly crash resistant and is affordable. Here are some types of rc planes for beginners you can try.

I want to see you succeed in the first flight so I recommend that your ideal trainer plane be robust and need less time to repair – preferably crash and fly. Here I have a case study for you. Please see which type of plane can be good beginner for you. The comment is based on my experience.

not to buy

Looks like trainer plane

Type 1  The plane has easy look and all appearance seems like a trainer plane. If I was starting into the rc hobby many year ago I would love to try this as my trainer. Sadly say that I will be totally wrong and will crash in the first place. The reasons are here. Its wing rib is constructed of wood, just look through the wing cover, and its design is seriously built for experienced flyer. At the wing tip it looks symmetrical – the upper part and lower part is equal in airfoil. This wing type is made for 3D and or aerobatic maneuver. Last, it uses Slow Fly propeller which is designated for 3D flying and to make some maneuver such as hovering.  My rating is + +

Motor on the nose

Type 2  Tough foam and high-wing design make this to be a good choice among new rc flyer. I bought one of this kind of plane when I was a newbie.  I fixed it a lot due to extensive accident. With repeatedly fixes and excessive glue here and there plus more reinforcement material added in, finally it was off balanced and was unable to fly. You can avoid this and save some money from what I said by choosing better designed plane. According to this plane I would like to point out that front propeller will damage in head-on crash. The landing gear is not necessary for the beginner since you will be more concentrated on flying, and you can practice a smooth belly landing.  However if you have some experience or being a moderate flyer you will love this type of plane and enjoy landing on a hard runway.  My rating is +++

Too weak fuselage

Too weak fuselage

Type 3  Smart design for beginner. The high wing plane with rear engine installation and the use of rubber band to hold the wing and fuselage in one piece.  Only one inferior feature I can point out is the limber landing gear and the tube fuselage behind the main wing. This makes it less resistance to crash or hard landing. It is expected that you will not fly it long since the main wing and tail wing will be off balanced after some crash due to its thin pipe fuselage.  My rating is + + + +

Ideal trainer for everyone

Type 4 This plane is mostly made from EPO (Expanded poly olefin). This material is tougher and is durable foam that will return to original form. It is high-wing plane that gets into balance on level flying when you leave neutral stick on the transmitter. Its motor sit behind the canopy and way above the fuselage, so in case of crash the motor and propeller will be safe. Its glider wing design gives you more time to correct the error. This plane (with wing span of 1.0 meter and above) is excellent for gliding, floating, and responding, thus is easy for newbie to correct control in flight. This type of plane is good to be rc planes for beginners. It is truly a forgiving plane. My rating is + + + + +

What do you think with the information above?  I do not push you to get along with the suggestion that I made, but rather point out good and bad side on each type of plane.  Some plane is not good for the beginner but will be better for intermediate flyer. Owing to my experience the best trainer plane is floating a lot – yes so good for beginner to make error and correct, but for me or other skillful flyer this will not be appreciated one.
