How to build flying wing



The last review was created for the new RC flyer to understand the flying wing in general.  For experienced flyer I believe you should have been flying it at least once, if this is correct I would like to hear how you feel about it in our comment box. Flying wing is always a fancy in most flying event due to its jaunty look and unique paint that is no limitation to the idea.  The one of mine is resemble to batman flying wing and it looks great in the sky. I got it in one occasion from my friend who lives in different town.  This local made product costs around 20 US dollar – no motor and any electrical gadgets included.  Not bad for the price and with the good setting it flies far beyond its cost.  OK that is a good reason to build our own one on the weekend.  Let’s start the project.

Let’s explore the material needed to build the flying wing.  The main substances we use are polystyrene foam, wing rib archetype, hand made foam cutter, foam glue, reinforcement tube, OPP tape, and your desire to build the flying wing.  The foam cutter can be made from any similar object around the corner but the most important part is the resistant wire. This is the so-called heat wire which is usually made from nickel and chrome but if it is difficult to find one you can buy the first acoustic guitar string which can do the job just fine.

Remember that this wire needs the electric current in order to generate the heat therefore you need to have one 12Vdc electric transformer regulator as a power supply.  This thing is commonly found in your house I hope. Buy one if you like causes it is no need to buy dedicated machine to cut the wing for this purpose.

The foam cutter can be built on the water pipe. Connect both end with the electric cable that leads to 12Vdc power supply. The length of cutter handle must be wider than each wing – this depends on the size of the wing you want to build. From the above plan your cutting tool must be longer than 18”.

Please use the above airfoil as an archetype for your flying wing. Enlarge the plan to reach 10” as a root chord and 4.5” as a tip chord. There are many airfoils you can choose from depends on your flying favorite. One place where you can find easy information of airfoil is

Once you have the desired airfoil you can attach them on the prepared foam as shown in the picture. Use the stationery pin to temporary fix them on the foam.

The technique to cut this foam sheet is explained in the video. The most important part is the holding posture on the foam cutter which must be firm with constant drag along the guide path.  Some suction air ventilator or ventilation fan is recommended for it can reduce the smell of burning foam during the cut.

With the wing cut process is finished you need to cut away some part of them as shown in the picture. This slot will be made for the insertion of reinforced stick. The reinforcement material can be hard plastic tube, L-shape aluminum bar or just wooden stick.  The idea is to increase the strength to the wing to withstand some substantial G-force during the flight so make sure that this material is light but strong for this reason.

The final part of this process is to cover the wing with some material and the most popular cover uses to be the OPP tape. You can use sticker or plank it with balsa if you like but most builder wants to keep it light so OPP tape seems to be good for the reason.  In some case the wing is designed to equip with nitro engine then balsa planking is much better for over all physical strength.
